dhk was engaged in 2006 by Joris and Natalie van Almenkerk to develop a master plan for the Estate, as well as to design the new 200 tonne winery, private tasting lounge and offices. Our involvement with the Estate planning included advising on the location of buildings such as new residences for the owners and estate manager, and the location and configuration of the new winery. Attention was also given to the farm workers’ village and farm infrastructure.

Strong wall elements are used throughout to accentuate the fragmentation of the buildings, and the strong structural response to the landscape. The large stone wall to the west of the winery focuses views as one travels down from the farm entrance, and then breaks to allow for entrance to the court. Access to the court is axial to the large entrance doors of the fermentation cellar, and once one enters the court, the view again opens up across the valley.

The first harvest was processed in the cellar in March and April 2009.
