2002 Competition Winner

The new Chemical Engineering Building, situated on the Upper Campus of the University of Cape Town, is the product of a 3-year collaborative process involving academics, researchers, architects, engineers, artists, builders and students.

From the outset it was apparent that the professional team were to engage with a highly motivated and enthusiastic client body, having an acute awareness of their role in the campus environment not only as a learning and research facility for post-graduate study, but also as a business, interfacing with industry through research.

This is a client who is aware of its responsibility toward the built environment of the campus as a whole and also the real business image that they wish to project. It was in the synthesis of these ideas that the challenge lay.
