Hermanuspieterfontein is a simple urban winery, located on the outskirts of the town of Hermanus.
The development consists of a collection of contemporary Cape vernacular buildings surrounding a strong working courtyard.
Each individual building has been designed and scaled to respond to its individual use [fermentation cellar, tasting building, bottle maturation shed], thus creating a hierarchy of buildings within the development. Despite the fact that each building is unique, they are of a similar architectural resolution, with strong design elements common to each building, creating a strong family of buildings that sit comfortably around the central courtyard. The large barrel cellar stretches below the entire development.
The spatial organisation of the buildings and the formal design of the courtyard make reference to the traditional Cape werf, giving the development legibility and creating a protected space around within which winemaking and other activities can take place. Since its completion the courtyard has become increasingly popular with the local community as an events space and is used every Saturday morning as an organic market.
