De Waterkant Development

De Waterkant Development is a former proposed concept for a 14-storey mixed-use development in the suburb of De Waterkant in Cape Town. The development accommodates retail and commercial functions on the lower three levels, with hotel, conference and high-end residential units comprising the upper levels. The crown contains a duplex penthouse with panoramic views of the surrounds. The design, which is derived from two intersecting monoliths with expressed voids and cuts, produces a form defined by a series of cascading terraces. It maximises the building envelope while intentionally avoiding the ubiquitous ziggurat shape that governs many development envelopes in Cape Town. This interlocking form creates a unique profile that addresses both the pedestrian and urban scales of its context.
