Dunkeld Public Realm Design Manual
The Dunkeld Public Realm Design Manual was created to provide detailed guidance for the development and design of the public realm in the Dunkeld Precinct Plan (2013).
Johannesburg’s CBD is enhanced by several office and commercial nodes within Braamfontein, Parktown, Sandton, Randburg and Rivonia. The development of the Dunkeld Precinct is intended to serve as a connection between the smaller Rosebank and Illovo nodes, creating a substantial new mixed-use precinct in the emerging multipolar structure that characterises Johannesburg.
Within the multipolar city, higher density development encourages and facilitates the use of public transport. This promotes a more evenly distributed transport network, improving accessibility and contributing to achieving greater social equity and an opportunity to reintegrate the apartheid city through development along accessible public transport routes.
The design develops the notion of the pedestrian scale grid and elaborates on the components that make up the public realm to encourage the creation of a vibrant, safe, accessible and pedestrian-oriented environment, adhering to sound urban principles, enhancing the character of the site and ensuring consistency across the area.
