The Crystal is a luxury residential apartment block comprising 41 units over three floors, located in the sought-after suburb of Camps Bay, Cape Town.
The building’s linear form stretches lengthways across the site and faces north towards the sea. Apartments range from one to three bedrooms and there is also a penthouse level. The design of the two long façades responds to the environmental conditions and the view. The front north facing façade is layered with recessed balconies that act as an outer skin, further articulated by adjustable sliding shutters that provide shelter from the afternoon sun. As these shutters are opened and closed by residents, the facade changes over the regular grid of the balconies.
The back and side facades are more solid and are punctured by smaller openings. The vertical circulation nodes at the back of the building take the form of glazed boxes that provide views of the surrounding mountains, and at night time form glowing lanterns that accentuate the length of the building.
