Twin Hotel and Residential Development

dhk’s former proposed design for a landmark twin hotel and residential development situated along Rivonia Road forms a key gateway into Sandton, Johannesburg. The design scheme comprises two buildings; a striking glass hotel that forms an active edge to Rivonia Road and an apartment complex behind it.

The architectural form is defined by the site’s orientation, optimising natural light and exposure to views – providing a highly distinctive shape.

A vertical visual corridor splits the hotel into two separate towers, not only reducing the building’s monolithic form but maximising views to the precinct beyond. The towers are perched on top of a podium containing the back and front of house facilities that spills out onto a miniature urban forest. In addition to the vertical break in the building, a horizontal split separates the podium, towers and a curved upper level that houses the hotel suites and lofts.

The apartment complex follows a similar footprint but features dynamic elevations in the form of unique angled balconies.
