dhk wins two SAPOA Awards for Innovative Excellence

Multidisciplinary design studio, dhk Architects, has won two SAPOA (South African Property Owners Association) Awards for Innovative Excellence. The prestigious award recognizes South Africa’s most innovative property developments that contribute towards the enhancement of the country’s built environment.

32 on Kloof, Winner in the “Refurbishment Category” and “Overall Heritage Winner”

Originally constructed in 1922 by prominent architecture firm Parker & Forsyth for the United Tobacco Companies Limited (UTC), 32 on Kloof once housed the company’s administration department. Developed by Growthpoint and designed by dhk, the building’s rich history has been respected via a contemporary aesthetic that references, rather than replicates, its existing heritage. Overall, 32 on Kloof respectfully enhances the streetscape of Kloof Street, creates frontage for the Longkloof precinct behind it, and serves to protect, preserve and celebrate the heritage of the building.

Parklands College Secondary School’s ‘Innovation Centre’, Winner in the “Other Category”

Parklands College along with development partner, Milnerton Estates, recently expanded its secondary faculty campus to include a new ‘Innovation Centre’. Designed by dhk, the new addition accommodates a variety of teaching methods all within an innovative, technology-based environment. A key focus area involved creating spaces to facilitate group work and classes that combine science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and more recently, art-based subjects into creative problem-solving activities. Another focus area was on creating workshop-style rooms to facilitate soft entrepreneurial- and vocational-based skills training.
