The Old Oak

This project at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club in Linksfield, Johannesburg, exemplifies how thoughtful contemporary architecture can reinvigorate heritage sites, balancing preservation with innovation. The scheme reimagined the existing clubhouse, incorporating new conference facilities, new administration office and a member’s gym. The iconic clock tower was also restored. A ‘halfway house’ for players was integrated into the existing structure.

The most significant development was the transformation of a separate standalone restaurant adjacent to the club building into a signature dining destination – the Old Oak restaurant. Kitchens, ablutions and back-of-house areas have been redesigned to serve a versatile dining venue that caters to families and fine diners alike.

The Old Oak redesign takes the form of a modern lightweight, steel-edged concrete and glass pavilion that serves as a counterpoint to the existing building. The original characteristic slate pitched roof has been retained. Crisp extruded slabs increase the internal space and lead into a floating terrace for outdoor dining. Sliding doors and full-height glazing leading to outdoor patios complete with private
seating areas around firepits, enhancing indoor/outdoor transparency.

A key feature is the improved arrival sequence. This includes a broad staircase and ramp, with stone-clad walls, linear water features and accent lighting leading to the lobby. The lobby features a projecting picture window overlooking a reflective pond with commemorative sculpture and golf course views.

A landscaped forecourt with a dedicated play area offers family-friendly outdoor seating. The cohesive material palette of white plaster, Irene stone and slate ties old and new elements together, extending to landscape and patio walls for visual continuity.

The restaurant’s namesake oak tree was badly diseased and could not be saved. It is memorialised with a cross-section set in resin and inset in a platform which serves as an intimate adaptable open-air events
venue. Since opening, Old Oak has become a popular destination for private members and the public and an exemplar of sensitive, sustainable redevelopment of local heritage architecture.
