The Hatfield Urban Design Framework outlines a vision for the renewal and transformation of Hatfield into a major town centre and an active, attractive urban node within City of Tshwane, South Africa’s administrative capital. The vision is expressed as a series of interwoven layers that work together to realise this transformation.
In 2018, we worked in a coalition with four other companies to prepare an urban design framework, implementation plan and phasing strategy in response to the brief. The framework takes a holistic approach to support the client’s vision and to understand Hatfield’s role within the broader city rather than only its immediate context. This approach ensures that future development in the study area will be sustainable, resilient and beneficial to Hatfield Town Centre and neighbouring areas.
The work included substantial research and sectoral analysis of national, provincial, regional and local guidelines and policy documents that had implications for the framework. It also included a socio-economic analysis of existing conditions inHatfield and an urban spatial analysis of trends in the study area. We also undertook an extensive precedent review and benchmarking exercise. This informed and established a series of conceptual design development proposals and objectives for the study area.
The final urban design framework was illustrated through a series of framework layers, along with detailed streetscape and landscape guidelines. An implementation and phasing plan identified strategic short- and medium-term projects. These included temporary interventions, development projects, infrastructure upgrades, public space improvements and operational projects.
Other consultants who collaborated on the project included Habitat Landscape Architects, Tech IQConsulting Engineers and Techso Smart Solutions.
