We were commissioned to develop the Dunkeld Public Realm Design Manual in 2015, for Intaprop. The project is a great example of how cohesive urban design planning can lead to better design for urban centres. The manual defines public realm design guidelines for the development of the Dunkeld Precinct, near Rosebank in Johannesburg. It establishes a connected network of public spaces, streets and pedestrian walkways, and sets guidelines for development within the precinct.
The public spaces network in the precinct incorporates non-motorised transport (NMT) corridors and pedestrianised streets, contributing to a more active, safe and walkable, human-scale urban environment. Pedestrianised walkways increase permeability and opportunities for local movement. Retail and commercial frontages at ground floor activate the streetscape. An urban square and pocket parks. A mega-basement removes vehicles from street level to enhance the quality of the environment.
The design manual gave rise to some of our other key projects, including the Oxford Parks development, 6Parks Boulevard for Arup, Radisson Red, Life Healthcare and One Rosebank.
